CA01 Lesson Task 3 – Doomsday rice

You have to design packaging for rice. The packaging has to be different from what is out there in the market. Apply each one of the SCAMPER techniques and do a write‑up on your findings. Then choose the option that you think would work best and do a sketch of what the packaging would look like.

I did a mind map, which made me conclude with “all is on the market”.

Substitute plastic for paper or wood to make it more eco friendly or porcelain for another use, combine with chop sticks, make the package so it can be used as a rice bowl or as a decorative container. Adapt it so there is no bulk, or so that you can go back in store for a refill, add a handle, make it lightweight and unbreakable. Modify it so it is air tight and can preserve rice for long periods of time, give it a easy and tight closure. Put it to another use as a serving bowl, a decorative vase, a container for storing other stuff, use it as a unit measurement tool. Eliminate the plastic, make the design as minimal as possible.

Mind map

There are so many different rice pacgagings on the market, and the design on similar packaging systems are even more. The more I searched, the more I thought abut durability and containment for long peroids. Rice is one of the most nutritious foods, and dried rice stores brilliant if you preserve it the right way. And, with the covid19 pandemic, increased climate changes, and most of all: multi corporate domination over food supplies, increased import and the declining degree of self-sufficiency (add a touch of “dangers of nuclear war” and so on), each family should be aware that keeping a food supply stacked away for bad times is smart, really smart.

With that said, all those images of bags of rice on google images became an idea in two parst, to meet two different markets:

The Rice Storage Survival Kit

  • for families and other who want a quick and ready to go solution for food supplies
  • stackable large 25kg container, light proof, water proof and rodent proof
  • inside, 100 mylar zip lock bags with oxygen absorbers containing 250 gram portions of dried jasmin rice
  • 10 extra oxygen absorbers
  • extra oxygen absorbers to be bought separately in packages of 20
  • extra mylar bags to be bought separately in packages of 20

Prepper’s kit for rice storage

  • for your average doomsday prepper, who wants to have total control over the food supply chain
  • stackable large 25kg container, light proof, water proof and rodent proof
  • inside, 100 mylar zip lock bags with oxygen absorbers, each bag can hold 250 gram of dried rice of your choosing
  • extra oxygen absorbers to be bought separately in packages of 20
  • extra mylar bags to be bought separately in packages of 20
quick sketch of the system

Applying SCAMPER to this:

Substituted regular container for everyday use with air tight, light proos, waterproof container.

Combined two packages, one large to hold porsion packages, so that you do not need open huge amount of rice at the same time – conserves rice longer

Adapted the packaging system to be stackable, it is easy to carry due to handles as well

Magnified it to contain 25kilos – any more would be difficult to lift by one person alone

Could be put to other use – the large container can be used for other storage purpouses, and the mylar bags can be reused for other dry food or rice

Eliminated the every day package

Reversed it: no cardboard box in a drawer for every day use until it is empty, but a huge container in the basement to give you safety and assurance should anything happen.
